Event Description:
Examine the traditional process of natural indigo dyeing from cultivation and harvest to vat preparation and textile application. Students will explore the history, chemistry, and techniques of indigo dyeing through hands-on studio practice using locally grown indigo. Activities include fresh leaf dyeing on silk, preparation of composted indigo pigment (sukumo), and dyeing sarashi cotton in a traditional Japanese sukumo fermentation vat. Emphasis is placed on natural dye methods, color development, and the cultural significant of indigo within textile arts traditions. All materials are provided.
