Rhinelander District Library Adult & Teen Departments: October Events
Missed the September spooky embroidery class? Here’s another opportunity. Join RDL Staff and pick one out of four spooky designs on Thursday, October 1st, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the library meeting room to craft your own seasonal decor. All materials will be provided. Please note, this class will require the use of sharp objects, as well as small, detailed stitching. Registration opens on September 17th with space limited to 7. For ages 18+.
Teens, here’s something for you! Create your own paper lanterns with RDL Staff on Friday, October 2nd, 2 – 3 p.m. in the library meeting room. All materials will be provided, including a battery-operated tea light candle to illuminate the stained-glass effect of the tissue paper. This craft will take approximately 30 – 60 minutes and is for teens ages 12 -18.
RDL’s Author Talk series continues with local crime fiction author Tom Burg on Tuesday, October 6th, 2 – 3 p.m. in the Rhinelander library meeting room. Thomas E. Burg grew up in Ohio and pursued a career as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (1967-1999), retiring as Senior Resident Agent in Wausau, WI. In retirement he pursued his interest in railroad history and authored numerous books in this field. When he realized that his career of experience provided a wealth of real crime plots and vignettes that could be presented in a fictionalized manner, he began writing crime stories. Since 2022 he has written five such novels, dubbed by Amazon as the Accidental Sheriff Series. Books will be available for purchase after the program, cash and checks accepted.
Kick off the start of spooky season with a cute, customizable terracotta pot hanger with RDL Staff on Thursday, October 8th, 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the library meeting room. Paint pumpkins, ghosts, or a combination of the two; the choice is yours. Registration opens on September 24th with space limited to 20. For ages 18+, and please plan attire for painting accordingly.
Join Jeff Kersten from the WI Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection to learn about common scams and frauds on Thursday, October 15th, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in the Rhinelander library meeting room. He will discuss the details of common scams, the warning signs of a scam, and what to do if you or someone you know falls victim to a scam or fraud. Helpful factsheets will be available. As Wisconsin’s lead agency for consumer protection, the Bureau of Consumer Protection
provides information and education, mediates complaints, investigates case, and takes enforcement actions to fight fraudulent and deceptive practices that harm customers and honest businesses.
Checkmate! RDL’s all-ages monthly Chess Club returns on Saturday, October 17th, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the library meeting room. Chess Club is open to all ages and levels of experience. Chess sets are provided. Learn to play or find a game! Regular attendees, please note that chess club has returned to the third Saturday of the month.
Back by popular demand! Join in on our third Puzzle Swap on Saturday, October 17th, from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. in the library Adult Department. Donations will be accepted the day of the event. Bring up to 5 of your puzzles, and receive tickets for selecting new puzzles from 10:30-11:00 a.m. People who donated will have the chance to pick out new puzzles in 5 structured selection rounds 11:00-11:30 a.m. All leftover puzzles will be donated to the library/Re-Tale shop.
In case your mantel or bookshelf needed one more cute thing just before Halloween, look no further. Join RDL in creating a yarn witch, using various yarn, a wooden bead, felt hat, and a stick on Thursday, October 22nd, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. Class participants can choose from a wide variety of donated yarn to make a yarn witch that complements you. Hat choices are black or purple. Registration opens October 8th, with space limited to 18. For ages 18+.
Join us for Streaming TV 101 on Friday, October 23, 10 – 11:30 a.m. in the library meeting room designed to be a relaxed, beginner-friendly class that takes the mystery out of watching your favorite shows, movies, and live TV. Deb from Help Desk Next Door will introduce you to popular streaming services, explain how they work, and help you choose the options that best fit your interests, viewing habits, and budget. Whether you're curious about Netflix, thinking about cutting the cable cord, or simply want to understand what everyone is talking about, this easy-to-follow class will help you stream with confidence. No registration required.
Feeling a little independent? Stop by to create your own Halloween Book Garland anytime between 12 – 2:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. This program is a passive and self-guided activity. Everything you will need to complete the garland will be available. Pick your shape, your paint, and create! No registration is required and is for ages 18+.
