RHINELANDER, WI — On Wednesday, October 28, students at Rhinelander High School will experience democracy firsthand through a school-wide mock election conducted during social studies classes.

In partnership with the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods (LWVNOW), students will participate in a simulated polling-place experience, including checking in, receiving a ballot, voting privately, and submitting their ballots. The ballot will feature races for Wisconsin governor, State Assembly District 34, and U.S. House District 7, and a constitutional amendment.

Student volunteers have trained to help run the election, with League members serving as mentors. RHS social studies teachers and school leadership have helped bring the project to life.

“Democracy is something students should have an opportunity to experience, not only study in the classroom,” said Debra Durchslag, president of the League of Women Voters of the Northwoods. “We want students to understand how elections work and see themselves as future participants in our democracy.”

The event is educational and nonpartisan. It is a mock election, not an official election, and the ballots will not affect actual election results.

Organizers hope this hands-on experience will build students’ civic confidence and become a continuing tradition at Rhinelander High School.

Media are welcome. Please contact Rhinelander High School in advance to coordinate coverage and access during the school day.
